About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Primary Design Engineer to join our Power Transmission & Distribution business based in Leeds

We are open to both full time and part time candidates (including job share), and offer a flexible working policy.

Role Purpose:

  • The main function of the role is to design the substation primary engineering for electrical substation projects up to a voltage of 400kV.
  • The role also includes the General, Planning and Procurement responsibilities as detailed below for delivery of substation projects.

What you'll be doing

Design Responsibilities:

  • Identify all relevant standards and Customer requirements, ensuring compliance with relevant National / International Standards and legislation, and contract specification.
  • Sound knowledge of AIS and GIS substation design up to 400kV.
  • Prepare and review substation design e.g. single line diagram, layout/Elevation drawings, MEWP access layouts.
  • Sound knowledge of proposal and optioneering design as per customer requirements.
  • Prepare substation design calculations e.g. earthing design, SC force calculations.
  • Familiar with electrical and mechanical interlocking philosophy
  • Produce equipment tech specs and engagement with supplier for their offer validation.
  • Civil and structure design validation.
  • Design work to be undertaken with due regard to Health, Safety & Environmental Procedures and production of Designer Risk Assessments, as necessary, to fulfil the Company obligations in compliance with current CDM regulations.
  • Examine contract documentation and establish the Company scope of work including termination boundaries. Where this differs with the tendered contract requirement then these differences should be highlighted to the Project Manager.
  • Attend and contribute to Design Review / Contract Close-out Meetings, ensuring that appropriate items are actioned in a timely manner.
  • Liaise with Designers and CAD technician on drawings requirements.
  • Initiate the preparation of all required drawings and approve all drawings to be submitted for customer / sub-contractor interface.
  • Interface with other discipline e.g. Civils, Protection, HV cables and OHL engineers
  • Primary equipment FAT witness knowledge is desirable.

Who we're looking for

Personal Qualities and Experience:

Education:

  • HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or higher.

Experience:

  • 6-8 years expiernsce in HV substation design engineering
  • Liaising with customers and suppliers;
  • Overall design and specification of electrical power systems and associated power system components;
  • Calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs;
  • AUTO CAD working experience is essential and AUTODESK Revit is desired
  • experience in substation design calculations to demonstrate integrity of designs. e.g. short circuit force, earthing design etc.
  • Microsoft Office Packages.
