About the role

Balfour Beatty has now created a new and exciting opportunity for an Examining Engineer to join our Regional Civils team to work on our closed railway branch line structures examinations contract across the UK.

Some of the railway infrastructure built by the Victorians was closed & dismantled decades ago later, however many of the structures are still used today, for e.g. by the public travelling over and under the remaining bridges. Balfour Beatty provides a service to the DfT (formerly British Railways Board) by examining the condition of these bridges, viaducts, culverts, tunnels and land. As an Examining Engineer you will be responsible for reviewing structures examination condition reports and preparing recommendations for maintenance & repair and the management of examiners on site, including monitoring and reporting of progress.

What you'll be doing

Some of the key activities will include: -

  • Reviewing examination reports prepared by structures examiners to British Rail standards & specification
  • Determining maintenance and repair needs
  • Producing recommendations to the client
  • Preparing examinations programmes and managing contractors
  • Reviewing finished works
  • Assisting, and potentially leading, tunnel examinations (subject to qualifications and experience)

Who we're looking for

Candidates must be Chartered Civil or Structural Engineers. In their engineering role they will have managed delivery of structures examinations / maintenance contracts, preferably with hands-on experience of rail structures examination/ asset management. They will be commercially aware, have held profit centre responsibility and have a good track record demonstrating excellent H&S, work winning, risk management, auditing, contract administration, supply chain management, communication and staff management skills. Ideally candidates will have experience of working in the rail industry.

Essential Qualifications & Experience: -

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, or other relevant qualifications/experience
  • Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer
  • STE2 Examining Engineer
  • Practising chartered engineer with an excellent proven track record in rail structures examinations & maintenance sector
  • Full clean UK driving licence

Desirable Qualifications & Experience: -

  • STE6 Tunnel Examining Engineer
